npm permission issues

While playing around with node.js a little, I kept seeing references to npm (a package manager for node-related code), which is a little cleaner than always cloning a git repository. Unfortunately, after I got it up and running, I kept running into an error similar to:

npm ERR! Error: EACCES, Permission denied ‘/usr/local/lib/node/.npm/.cache/socket.io’
npm ERR!     at node.js:773:9

I installed a few packages with sudo a couple of times, but there were warnings about that (for obvious reasons). Updating the permissions with the following command seems more reasonable, though.
sudo chown -R $USER /usr/local.
